Getting started

Installation

One-line installers, options, manual downloads with checksums, unsigned-installer warnings, proxies, updating and uninstalling — for both agents.

Both agents install the same way: a one-line command downloads a small bootstrap script from the agent's own repository. The bootstrap finds the latest release, downloads the installer for your system, and checks it against the release's published SHA-256 checksums. If the checksum doesn't match, it stops before running anything.

Prefer to read before running? Each repository's installer/install.sh and installer/install.ps1 are plain scripts under Apache-2.0: download one, read it, then run it.

Requirements

AlbertCode SWE Agent mini-AlbertCode SWE Agent
Windows 10 or 11, x64 (also runs on ARM PCs). PowerShell 5.1 or 7 10 or 11, x64 (also runs on ARM PCs). PowerShell 5.1 or 7
macOS A current macOS, Apple silicon or Intel macOS 11 or later, Apple silicon or Intel
Linux x86-64 with glibc: Ubuntu 20.04+, Debian 10+, Fedora, RHEL 8+, openSUSE, Arch Same
Not supported Alpine and other musl systems; Linux on ARM Alpine and other musl systems
Disk About 1 GB free About 1 GB free
Network pypi.org and github.com while installing; your model provider while working Same
Git Recommended; offered if missing Needed; installed after asking if missing
Python Not needed: your Python 3.12 is used if present, otherwise one is downloaded for the agent alone Same

There is no official container image. The installers set the agent up for your user account directly.

Quick install

AlbertCode SWE Agent — macOS and Linux:

Terminal
curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/huynvic/albertcode-swe-agent/main/installer/install.sh | sh

Windows (PowerShell):

PowerShell
irm https://raw.githubusercontent.com/huynvic/albertcode-swe-agent/main/installer/install.ps1 | iex

mini-AlbertCode SWE Agent — macOS and Linux:

Terminal
curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/huynvic/mini-albertcode-swe-agent/main/installer/install.sh | sh

Windows (PowerShell):

PowerShell
irm https://raw.githubusercontent.com/huynvic/mini-albertcode-swe-agent/main/installer/install.ps1 | iex

On Linux, run it as yourself, not with sudo: it installs for your user and asks for your password only if it needs to install Git. On Windows you don't need "Run as administrator".

What the installer does

  1. Checks, changing nothing. It looks for an existing installation and its version, a running service, a suitable Python, Git, free disk space, and whether it can reach the package index.
  2. Shows its plan and asks Proceed? [Y/N]. If you answer N, nothing changes.
  3. Installs, for your user only. It downloads what is missing first, so a failed download leaves an existing installation untouched; stops and replaces an older version; installs the agent in an environment of its own, so your other Python projects are unaffected; and adds the command to your PATH.
  4. Verifies. It checks the version and the commands, then starts the service once and waits for it to answer.

Every installer run writes a log:

Agent macOS, Linux Windows
AlbertCode SWE Agent ~/.local/share/albertcode-installer/install.log %LOCALAPPDATA%\AlbertCode\install.log
mini-AlbertCode SWE Agent ~/.local/share/mini-albertcode-installer/install.log %LOCALAPPDATA%\mini-albertcode-installer\install.log

Options

Option Meaning
(none) Check, show the plan, ask, install
--check Only check and show the plan
--yes Install without asking (scripts, CI)
--reinstall Install again even when this version is already installed
--version X.Y.Z Install that release instead of the latest
--uninstall Remove the agent

On macOS and Linux, pass options after -s --:

Terminal
curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/huynvic/albertcode-swe-agent/main/installer/install.sh | sh -s -- --check

On Windows, set them in an environment variable first — ALBERTCODE_INSTALL_ARGS or MINI_ALBERTCODE_INSTALL_ARGS:

PowerShell
$env:ALBERTCODE_INSTALL_ARGS = '--check'; irm https://raw.githubusercontent.com/huynvic/albertcode-swe-agent/main/installer/install.ps1 | iex

Manual download

Every release lists the installer for each system, plus a SHA256SUMS file. Take the file for your system from the latest release of albertcode-swe-agent or mini-albertcode-swe-agent:

System AlbertCode SWE Agent mini-AlbertCode SWE Agent
Windows Install-AlbertCode-<version>-windows-x64.cmd Install-mini-AlbertCode-<version>-windows-x64.cmd
Mac, Apple silicon Install-AlbertCode-<version>-macos-arm64.zip Install-mini-AlbertCode-<version>-macos-arm64.zip
Mac, Intel Install-AlbertCode-<version>-macos-x86_64.zip Install-mini-AlbertCode-<version>-macos-x86_64.zip
Linux, x86-64 Install-AlbertCode-<version>-linux-x86_64.sh Install-mini-AlbertCode-<version>-linux-x86_64.sh

Double-click the .cmd on Windows; open the .zip on a Mac and double-click the installer inside; on Linux run bash with the .sh. AlbertCode SWE Agent releases also carry the VS Code extension, albertcode-<version>.vsix — install AlbertCode itself first, then in VS Code choose Extensions → … → Install from VSIX.

Check a download before running it:

Terminal
sha256sum -c SHA256SUMS --ignore-missing # Linux
shasum -a 256 -c SHA256SUMS --ignore-missing # macOS
PowerShell
(Get-FileHash .\Install-AlbertCode-<version>-windows-x64.cmd -Algorithm SHA256).Hash # compare with SHA256SUMS

Unsigned installers

The installers aren't code-signed yet (it is on the roadmap). Until they are:

  • Windows SmartScreen may say it protected your PC. Choose More info → Run anyway. If your organisation blocks PowerShell scripts, use the downloaded .cmd installer.
  • macOS Gatekeeper says it can't verify the installer. Choose Done, open System Settings → Privacy & Security, click Open Anyway, then open the installer again.

The one-line commands avoid both warnings, because nothing is downloaded through a browser.

Proxies and inspected networks

Set HTTPS_PROXY (and HTTP_PROXY) before running the command. If your workplace inspects encrypted traffic with its own certificate, current installers say so and retry with your computer's trusted certificates; if a download still fails with invalid peer certificate or UnknownIssuer, set UV_NATIVE_TLS=1 and run the command again.

Updating

Agent How Keys
AlbertCode SWE Agent Run the install command again. It shows what will change, then replaces the old version Saved provider keys and model choices are cleared the first time a new version starts: reconnect with /connect
mini-AlbertCode SWE Agent albert-mini update (or --check to only look). It checks the new installer against the release's SHA-256 and runs it. Running the install command again does the same Sessions are always kept. Keys and model choices are kept unless the new version carries a new AlbertCode engine; then the plan says so

Uninstalling

Terminal
albertcode uninstall # or: albert-mini uninstall

It needs nothing from the internet, lists what it will remove, and asks first. --check only shows the plan; --all also removes your settings, saved keys and history. Without --all, your settings and history are kept and the uninstaller says where. Your repositories are never touched.

The install scripts can uninstall too, with --uninstall (see Options).
